When Bank of China Elite Miles card was launched, it showed a lot of promise as a miles card. With one of the market best earning rate at 1.5 miles per dollar (MPD) locally (2 MPD till 31 December 2018) and 3 miles per dollar for foreign currency (FC) spending (5 MPD till 31 December 2018), what can go wrong? Well, I was dead wrong!

After 1.5 weeks in Texas and Panama, it was time for us to move on to our final stop – New York. Without any fifth freedom flights from Star Alliance, I am left with either Copa Airlines or United Airlines. While United Airlines had a slightly better timing, redeeming a ticket can be rather challenging. Copa Airlines on the other hand can be redeemed directly from the Krisflyer portal without any issue. Although there are 3 flights into JFK, neither is good and only CM 804 was available for redemption (for my travel date). The redemption cost is 30,000 miles per person in Business Class.

This is a very new route that was launched only in April 2019. Twice a week, Air China would have a 5th freedom flight from Houston to Panama City operated on a Boeing 777-300ER. The other options would be United Airlines which uses a Boeing 737. Between an international long-haul First Class vs a domestic USA First Class, the choice if very obvious.
Air China being part of Star Alliance can be redeemed using Krisflyer miles (and it can be searched directly from Singapore Airlines website). The miles required on First Class is 40,000 miles per person while Business Class requires 30,000 miles (it has since been devalued to 46,000 and 34,500 miles respectively).
So how did the flight go?

One of the most common question someone new into redemption would ask:
ISN’T IT BETTER FOR ME TO DO A LONG HAUL ECONOMY/PREMIUM ECONOMY REDEMPTION INSTEAD OF REGIONAL/SHORT HAUL PREMIUM?
The answer is NO. The 2 rules I will tell my friends would be:
- No Economy / Premium Economy redemption
- No ADVANTAGE redemption (this however may work to your ADVANTAGE)
I have broken both rules before – and this was for a special reason – SQ22 Inaugural and SQ21 return.

With only one week to go, the cost for award redemption on Singapore Airlines is going up for both First and Business Class redemption (I shall only talk about Saver Award – lets be realistic, I doubt many of us can afford the Advantage Award ticket). The cost for Economy Class redemption remains the same and the margin between Premium Economy and Business is so small that Premium Economy is not worth considering (barring special circumstances).

2018 had been a pretty busy year, and from the look of things – 2019 will be the same. What bad news we have that another round of devaluation from Krisflyer is just around the corner.
It was only in March 2017 that we had one round of devaluation (the biggest being the removal of the 15% discount for online redemption). To soften the blow, Singapore Airlines removed the fuel surcharge. This round, there is nothing to soften the blow as Business Class and First Class award tickets starting from Zone 1! (while Economy Class redemption remained). Perhaps, the permanent feature of Spontaneous Escape will be this round’s cushion but only a select few will be able to take advantage of the Spontaneous Escape promotion).

We had to do a last minute trip to Wuhan for a few days. It was unfortunate that we had to give up the same ticket we redeemed in September using the 50% discount on spontaneous escape. I had wrote a brief review on Silkair Economy Class for our travel in June (exact destination) and let’s see how does Silkair’s Business Class stand?

More Spontaneous Escapes from Singapore Airlines Krisflyer redemption – but locations this round seems more limited!
One destination that is worth considering however, is DPS. Only 17,500 miles for a return ticket in Business Class! SQ uses the A330-300 for their DPS service. It may not use the latest Business Class seats, it is still a fairly comfortable way to travel on a 2.5 hours flight. You will get to try out the Silverkris Lounge and a BTC on the way to Bali.

Singapore Airlines is having a promotion for Krisflyer redemption on selected destinations for travel in month of November. There is a 30% discount to a few destinations (on both Economy and Business Class) listed in the table below.

While not unexpected, the upcoming devaluation of the Krisflyer programme still came as a blow to many. Come on, who likes to pay more for the same thing? Like it or not, award programme is still subjected to real world inflation. So after all the posts about Krisflyer, I shall talk about something different: AVIOS.
