This was just a short stop in the lounge, just before my boarding. Unfortunately, I think I lost my camera here too 😦

The sad fate of the MH A380-800
This was written up earlier by BD during his flight back to ZRH from KUL via DOH. Finally I had a chance for me to try out this lounge. This is a different lounge from Plaza Premium Lounge which is a Priority Pass lounge (this is not). This lounge serves as a Business Class Lounge for Qatar Airways (and also 3 other airlines). The lounge is not very big but it is more than adequate as it handles only a handful of Business Class passengers.
Qatar Airways had a tremendous promotion for Business Class ex KUL and BKK late 2016 and I decided to make the plunge and grab the tickets for my most recent family trip. How good the discount was? KUL-DOH-FRA was going at $1.7k SGD all-in while my KUL-DOH-HEL ticket was going at about 1.9k SGD. If I were to do SIN-DOH-HEL? It would cost about 3.4k SGD!

Plaza Premium First lounge in KLIA Satellite (not to be confused with Plaza Premium Lounge) is a brand new lounge in KLIA that has been contracted by Qatar Airways to serve as their Business Class lounge. This lounge also serves as the lounge for Etihad and Turkish Airlines too. It is located near Starbucks.

Now for the last leg of flight from Doha to Kuala Lumpur. The flight is operated on a Dreamliner (Boeing 787-8). 787-8 only comes in 2 cabin, Business and Economy. Business class in 787-8 is arranged in the 1-2-1 configuration (in reverse herringbone formation). This means the passengers will be facing away from the aisle. For this flight, I was seated in seat 2E.
Al Mourjan Lounge is the flagship Business Class lounge for Qatar Airways in Doha. It is a very huge lounge (spanning 2 storeys) with 2 restaurants inside. I was initially expecting that I would be able to use the Al Safwa First Class Lounge (as I flew in on First Class but out to KUL on Business as there was no First Class to KUL). Unfortunately, I was only allowed access to Al Mourjan.
Being part of One World alliance, Al Mourjan is accessible not only for Qatar Airways Business Class passengers but also for One World First and Business Class travelers.
The emergence of Airbus A380 opened up many possibilities for airlines to configure their planes, once impossible. We have Singapore Airlines with their Suites, Etihad with their Residence and Apartment and Emirates with their on board shower. These special classes can be configured to be on either level 1 or 2 (although Airbus prefers it to be on level 2). Qatar houses its First Class cabin on the upper deck, with only 8 seats. It has a very generous 83” pitch but with only 23” of width. Unlike Singapore Airlines / Emirates or Etihad, Qatar Airways uses open suite. They have an on-board bar in between First and Business Class cabin (this is not something unique and is available on both Emirates and Etihad A380).
TTOTY would like to welcome BD, our new contributor to the blog. BD is currently based in Europe and he travels extensively due to the nature of his work. Through his many travels, he had tried many different airlines (across all classes). He has decided to share his experience with us through his reviews on this site. He shall start off with his first review here. What better way to start if not to review one of the best airlines in the world, Qatar Airways. The first post will be on Qatar Airways Premium Lounge in Charles De Gaulle (CDG) Airport, Paris.
With the conclusion of TTOTY Part 1, it is time to plan for TTOTY Part 2. This will be the following route:
