I booked this trip for my family year end trip and the price was certainly attractive! I paid $470 per person (all inclusive) which is way cheaper than what I paid for my ticket to Wuhan. Both SQ 830 and SQ 833 is flown on the A380, specifically the new A38R. The last 5 A380-800 that was delivered last year spots the new Suites (6 Suites in the forward section of upper deck) and the all new Business Class (with the double bed at the bulkhead). The Premium Economy and Economy section however is the same as that of the 2015 and 2013 design. Besides Shanghai, the other destinations that utilizes the A38R include Hong Kong, Sydney, London and Zurich (I am still hoping for SQ25/26 to get this but I doubt this will be the case).
Although we had an upgrade option, the minimum bid price at $480 is certainly far from attractive (one way) and I decided to give it a miss. I did our check in at the airport as I had some issue with online check in. Check in was prompt and painless with the self-service kiosk which was very convenient. Once our boarding passes / luggage tags were printed, we went to the self-service baggage deposit counter to drop our luggage (certainly a big difference from what I had with the First Class Check in) but hey, I only paid $470 for it. Also, no lounge access this time :(.
For my flights, SQ830 was operated on 9V=SKW while my return flight on SQ833 was on the older 9V-SKN. Listed below are the differences between the 2013 and 2006 cabin:
- Seat colour – the newer cabin uses a blue and grey colour scheme while the older one uses the brown and beige colour
- TV screen – the new cabin spots a 11.1” Full HD touchscreen while the older one uses a 9” screen
- Remote control – Singapore Airlines has decided to get rid of remote control on the new plane
- Control panels – the new cabin spots a dedicated light and call button (which was located on the remote on the old one). The location of the headphone plug has also been shifted
The seat is the same as what I had on my April flight from Bangkok on the Dreamliner. The difference being the seat width which was certainly much better on the A380 than the 787.
Service was good on SQ830 while it was a little robotic and cold on SQ833. Earbuds were not distributed on SQ833 (unless one asked for it). This could be due to the flight being fuller on SQ833. The only bright spot? Christmas decoration :).
Here are some pictures of the food:

Flying on Singapore Airlines Economy Class is still a very pleasant experience, from the comfort of the cabin to the variety of the entertainment. Food for this flight was at best average, while the service unfortunately was a bit of a hit and miss. Although we had a good set of crew to Shanghai, the same cannot be said for our flight back. At $470, the price is indeed extremely attractive!
For the trip to Shanghai, try to seat as forward as possible as one should try to go to the immigration counter ASAP (for foreigners, you would need to go to the registration kiosk to register your passport). For those traveling with kids, you get free seat selection (otherwise chargeable at $10 per seat) and once check in opens, one can get the forward zone seat and extra legroom seat FOC – if these are not taken).
Bonus – some pictures of the new Singapore Airlines Suites (not from this flight).

I never thought id be one of those people that flies exclusively on one airline, as I’m cheap as hell. But damn after using SQ for the last few years, i can’t switch to anything else!
