After 3 nights in the city, we moved on to our next destination which is Gamboa Reserve in the district of Colon. Situated roughly halfway between Panama City and Colon, the road goes through the forest and along the Panama Canal. Getting into the resort is easy with Uber but getting out? That can be quite challenging.
Once there, you will be greeted by the sight of a large and majestic resort that one stood glamorously 20 to 30 years ago but now looking rather worn out. Despite that, it still retains a certain charm for those seeking to be away from the city.

This ryokan came as a recommendation from my wife (from her read up) and after doing some search of my own, it came recommended by many. As it is situated in Nara, it allows me to do a Ryokan stay and visit Nara at the same time. Kansai International Airport has a direct bus (2050 Yen per person) and the journey takes about 1.5 hours. The bus is comfortable and comes with on board toilet too! Do check the timing online before planning your journey.

Over the years, my preference for my hotel bookings has slowly switched from 3rd party sites (Expedia – mainly for its 6 miles per dollar promo with Citibank previously) to that directly from the hotel. This is due to progressively less bonus promo from credit cards (DBS Visa Altitude still has 6 miles per dollar promo) and more expensive hotels (Kaligo offers 10 to 12 miles per dollar but at a significantly higher price).
My preference further changed once I signed up for the IHG Ambassador programme which then make me choose IHG properties as my first option (direct booking with IHG). There are indeed benefits one can get from booking directly with the hotel (especially when you have status with them) e.g. my stay in Holiday Inn Munich. Another of my preference (but only if I will be staying for 4 nights) will be utilizing the Citi Prestige’s Hotel Night benefit (in which the 4th night will be free!). One can occasionally double dip on this privilege (e.g. for my upcoming stay in Osaka where I managed to book on IHG for Holiday Inn Namba using member’s rate, getting the points and get the 4th night free!).

Banff which is situated about 2 hours away from Calgary is a small town within Banff National Park. It is a small town with most of the hotels and lodges situated along the main street which is Banff Avenue. Banff Aspen Lodge is one of these lodges. Like most hotels in Banff (with the exception of Banff Spring Hotel), it is a low rise building (4 storeys, including basement). As it is situated near the town centre, it is within walking distance to many restaurants and an IGA supermarket is nearby along Elk Street. Further down Banff Avenue, you will reach the central park. The Bow River Trail and the Bow Falls Trail are situated on either side of the banks of Bow River.

Residence Inn in Downtown LA is located at one of the newest part of downtown, named L.A. Live. The hotel building is actually 2 hotels in 1 (i.e. Residence Inn and Courtyard, both under Marriott Group). I booked this hotel via Expedia (for the 6 miles per dollar under Citibank promo) as it was cheaper than booking with Marriott directly.

We had to stay overnight in Pearson as our flight to Los Angeles the following day (AC791) departs at 8:00 am. With the US Border pre-clearance in Toronto, I had to make sure we arrive in Pearson by 5:30 am. There are many hotels around Pearson but the 2 most convenient hotels are Sheraton Gateway (at Terminal 3) and ALT Hotel at Viscount Station.

After 2 excellent nights in Boston Intercontinental, we moved on to its counterpart in Toronto. Located within downtown Toronto, Intercontinental is located about 45 to 50 minutes away from Pearson International Airport (via taxi). It cost about CAD $55 (excluding tips) on a cab. Alternatively, one can take the Union Express up to Union Station which is located just next to the hotel.

I booked Boston Intercontinental as part of my Expedia Citibank mile earning run (at 6 mile/$, this is one of the best mile earning promotion in Singapore). This was my most expensive hotel stay (per night) as I booked myself in the Club Intercontinental room. I was initially contemplating between booking directly through IHG (which would earn me 2 miles/USD + 2 miles/SGD for foreign currency spent) vs. Expedia (at 6 miles/$) vs. Kaligo (at 10 miles/$). Despite an attractive 10 miles/$, Kaligo’s price is way more expensive than Expedia’s (and they had no option for Club Room). Price between Expedia and IHG was about similar and miles earned would have been about 6300 miles (for Expedia) vs. 3600 miles (for IHG). In the end I decided to make use of the Expedia promotion.
