After completing my flight trip reports, I will now turn my attention to the hotels I have stayed in during my trip.
My first stop was Residence Inn New York. Times Square. The name is a misnomer as it is not located within Time Square but a few streets of it. Times Square is around the confluence of Broadway, 7th Avenue and 42nd street while the hotel is located at the junction of 39th street and 6th Avenue (a.k.a Avenue of Americas). The 42nd street station is just a stone throw away (with a new subway entrance being constructed just next to the hotel). It is diagonally opposite to Bryant Park. In terms of convenience, Residence Inn is strategically located. 34th street Macy is just 6 streets downtown (same as Empire State Building) while Rockefeller building is 10 streets uptown (at 50th street). Many Broadway theatres are also within walking distance, hence one can easily reach walk back after the show.
We stayed in the hotel from 10 – 14 November (4 nights). We booked the hotel via Citibank Prestige Concierge (to enjoy the 4th night free). Taking into account of the free night, it averaged out to be about SGD $400 per night (inclusive of about 14.5% tax). Given the location and the generally high price of Manhattan Hotels, $400 per night including tax is quite reasonable (and it came with free breakfast!).
The room is pretty spacious (at about 400 sq ft). It is a studio room suite with a small but well equipped kitchenette, a living room with a sofa bed, a bathroom, wardrobe with built in safe box, a large screen LCD TV and a large and comfortable king sized bed. We stayed on the 6th floor, where there wasn’t much of a view (6th avenue and 40th street). Despite being closed to the streets, there wasn’t much noise at night. The room is clean in general but the decoration is a little dated and worn down. The bed was particularly comfortable. Bath room was a little small and there was no handheld shower. The kitchen came equipped with a dishwasher (with dining wares and cutleries), coffee maker, microwave oven and a 2 door fridge. For those who would prefer to cook, Residence Inn would be a good option. Otherwise, there are plenty of nearby eateries.
Breakfast is free for all residents and is available from 630am to 1030am. The dining room gets a little packed after 9am, hence do plan to have your breakfast before that (unless you want to sleep in). Selection was quite good during our stay (for free breakfast) with some hot items available (such as scrambled eggs, omelettes, potatoes and sausages). There is a DIY waffles maker as well. Beverages include tea, coffee, milk and juices (they even provide take away cups).
A gym is available in the basement, but given that we were still recovering from our jet lag, we did not try it out.
Residence Inn is part of Marriott Group hence one should be able to earn points/miles. Singapore Airlines currently award 1 mile / USD spent in Residence Inn.
Value: 3.5* (4* with the 4th night free)
Location: 4*
Comfort: 3.5*
Cleanliness: 3.5*

Looks totally decent. Taking into acount that New York is extreemly expensive, it actually looks like a good deal. Thanks for the detailed review 🙂
